What Are Common Symptoms of Poor Hydration?
It's 2:47 PM, and you've had water and coffee, but you still can't focus on the email in front of you.
Most people don't realize that poor hydration rarely announces itself with a dry throat. It usually shows up as the afternoon slump, the dull headache, or the workout that felt heavier than it should have. We tend to blame our schedules, our sleep, or our stress, but the real cause is often a shortage of fluids and electrolytes.
If you go hard with 6am classes, packed workdays, long flights, and weekends that don't slow down, your body spends fluids faster than you think. These are the signs that it's asking for a refill.
1. You feel tired even when you slept well.
Your body needs enough fluid to keep your blood volume steady and to move oxygen and nutrients where they need to go. When fluid runs low, everything has to work harder, and you notice it as a sudden drop in energy. If your 2 pm slump arrives like clockwork, look at your hydration before you reach for a fourth coffee.
2. You get dull, persistent headaches.
A headache is one of the most common signals of low fluid intake. It's easy to miss because it feels just like a stress headache. If it fades after you drink fluids and replace your electrolytes, then you've found your answer.
3. You can't concentrate.
Even mild dehydration is linked to slower focus, shorter attention spans, and a foggier head. If you've read the same paragraph three times, then maybe treat that as a cue to drink up. Steady hydration supports steady focus.
4. Your urine is dark or infrequent.
Urine colour is the easiest check you have. Dark yellow or amber urine, or going far less often than usual, means you're behind on fluids. Some B vitamins can turn urine bright yellow, so judge by the overall pattern instead of a single colour.
5. Your mouth and lips feel dry.
Thirst, dry lips, and a sticky mouth are the obvious signs, and they still count. By the time you feel properly thirsty, you're already playing catch-up. Bad breath can also be an early signal that you need more fluid.
6. Your muscles cramp or feel weak.
Water alone doesn't always solve this problem. Your muscles rely on electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium to contract and release properly. If you sweat through a workout, a hot day, or a long flight without replacing them, cramps and heavy legs often follow.
7. You feel dizzy when you stand up.
Feeling woozy after you stand can point to low fluid volume. If it happens regularly, or if it comes with a racing heart, you should pay attention to it.
8. Your skin looks dull or feels tight.
Your skin is one of the last places in your body to receive fluid, which makes it a useful warning sign. Skin that looks flat, feels tight, or has lost its bounce can reflect what's happening inside.
9. You crave sugar, especially the morning after a late night.
Thirst and hunger can blur together, so a dehydrated body can send you reaching for snacks you don't need. Late nights, travel, and alcohol all draw down your fluids, which makes the morning-after version even more noticeable.
When it's more than poor hydration
Mild signs usually respond to fluids and electrolytes. Confusion, fainting, a very rapid heartbeat, or going many hours without urinating are not symptoms to power through, so please seek medical care if you notice them. Anyone with a medical condition should take dehydration extra seriously.
Why water alone isn't always enough
Hydration depends on what's in your drink as well as how much you drink. You lose sodium, potassium, and magnesium when you sweat, and plain water doesn't put them back.
That's the reasoning behind how we built Drastic Drink. Every bottle contains real electrolytes from sea salt, potassium chloride, and magnesium citrate. It also contains the amino acids glycine and L-glutamine, along with vitamins B3, B5, and B12 to support energy metabolism and vitamin C for antioxidant support and immune function.
Two more ingredients set our formula apart. Korean pear extract has been a staple of Korean recovery drinks for generations, and mung bean powder has deep roots in traditional Asian remedies. We pair them with ginger to help with any inflammation and star anise because recovery shouldn't taste like a compromise.
The taste is just as intentional, and you can choose between two flavours:
- Drastic Drink Raspberry Hibiscus has 30 calories and is tart, floral, and fierce, thanks to real raspberry purée and hibiscus extract.
- Drastic Drink Mango Passionfruit has 50 calories and is loud, juicy, and alive, thanks to sweet mango and bright passionfruit purées.
Both flavours are caffeine-free and low in calories, and we're proud that they're made in Canada. They also deliver high hydration.
A simple daily hydration check-in
- Start your morning with fluids before you have your coffee.
- Check your urine colour once or twice a day, and aim for pale.
- Replace your electrolytes after workouts, flights, and late nights instead of relying on water alone.
- Don't wait until you're thirsty, especially on busy days.
- Keep a drink within reach that you actually want to finish, because you'll drink more of it.
The hydration era is officially activated, and your next step takes only a few seconds.
Fuel your day the Drastic way.
